As the evenings draw in and the days get shorter Autumn is the perfect time to get those electrical jobs sorted before Christmas.
We all have those to do jobs that mount up for months such as , an outdoor socket that isn’t working properly, an extractor fan that’s seen better days, a light that needs replacing or a socket that really needs moving to a more convenient position.
Before the busy Christmas period arrives, take a moment to think about your home’s electrics and think whether anything needs urgent attention.
Check your lighting before the darker evenings arrive
With less daylight, we rely much more heavily on lighting during autumn and winter.
If you have flickering lights, faulty switches or dark areas around your home, Autumn is a great time to get them sorted. It’s also the best time to add lighting to your home such as hallway lighting, an outdoor light for the darker evenings, or additional lighting in a kitchen, garage or garden for safety and aesthetics.
Don’t forget your outdoor electrics
Autumn and winter weather can be particularly hard on outdoor electrical equipment.
Check your outdoor sockets, security lights and other fixed electrical equipment outside.
Check for any visible damage, loose covers or anything that looks as though it has deteriorated. Outdoor sockets should always have appropriate weather protection and RCD protection.
If an outdoor socket keeps tripping, a security light has stopped working or you need an additional external power supply, it’s always best to have the work carried out by a qualified electrician.

Those small electrical jobs you’ve been putting off
Not every electrical job involves rewiring a whole house. Sometimes it’s simply a case of getting those few small but important jobs finally ticked off the list.
This could include:
- Replacing or adding more convenient sockets
- Replacing faulty switches
- Installing efficient security lighting
- Fitting Ring doorbells, cameras or lights
- Installing or replacing old non working extractor fans
- Fault finding
- Adding power to a garage or outbuilding
- Making electrical improvements before decorating
- Installing new light fittings

At Electrisafe, no electrical job is too small.
Is your EICR due?
An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) involves inspecting and testing the fixed electrical installations in your home to identify any potential problems and areas that may require attention.
Autumn is a good time to think about the overall condition of your home’s electrical installations.
If you’ve recently moved into an older property in Bournemouth and the surrounding areas or just can’t remember when the electrics were last checked, or you’re planning work around the home, an EICR can be a useful way of understanding the condition of the existing installation.
We also carry out EICRs for landlords, where regular electrical safety checks are a mandatory part of a rental property.
Could your consumer unit do with an upgrade?
If your home still has an older consumer unit (fuse box) or you’ve noticed problems such as frequent tripping, it may be worth having it checked out.
Modern electrical installations can incorporate additional protective measures, including RCD protection.

However, your old consumer unit doesn’t automatically mean it needs replacing. The best approach is to have it assessed by a qualified electrician who can explain what, and if anything, needs doing to bring it up to safety standards.
